Here are some pictures of what we have been up to so far in English, Maths, Design Technology and Science!

Look at the fun we had on our WW2 parent involvement day! Our classroom was turned into Netherton Evacuee Centre and we hosted 24 evacuees. They had to cook, wash up, make Anderson Shelters, write postcards home and even learnt the Charleston dance! ” It was the best day ever” said one pupil supported by further parent emails reporting on how much the children had learnt and enjoyed the day.

Reading For Pleasure

We are so excited about our new adventures into promoting reading for pleasure at Netherton. We have spent a great deal of time mapping our our pupil’s reading diet and ensuring  that we have quality and challenging texts for all reading abilities. Please see the the LTP for more information on some of the books we read in Year 5. This will be added to throughout the year as the children share and delight in the books they want to explore. Further information can also be found on the English page for reading.

Book Club is a protected time for pupils to explore stories, share in books they have read, discuss the class journal, watch clips from films such as Goodnight Mr Tom, listen to authors and how they became successful and generally have the opportunity to submerge themselves in reading for pleasure. Pupil feedback has been fantastic and there is a real buzz on a Friday afternoon in Year 5.

Meet our reading squad and reading leaders who help support reading throughout school.

Year 5 Mathematicians

To help us learn our timetables and continue to improve our speed and recall, we have our own login for Timetables Rockstars

To help us become better Mathematicians we follow the White Rose Maths Hub as our main scheme of learning. We use a wealth of other resources to help us embed our learning further and enjoy lots of practical investigations in maths. Further parent support can be found on the website to support home learning . https://whiteroseeducation.com/

Super Scientists in Year 5

As scientists we first investigate what science is all about and why it is so important to our learning and development. We discuss what we can use to help us learn and develop. These are some of the characters we have displayed in our classroom.

Autumn one we investigate Earth and Space, how planets rotate around the sun. Why we have a day and a night time and the stages of the moon.We look look at shadows and the position of the sun throughout the day.

Autumn two we investigate Materials. Looking at solubility, transparency, conductivity and hardness of different materials. Lots of investigations and experimenting with this topic!

Spring one and two we will explore Forces and the use of gravity. We will design parachutes for a favorite old friend and look at resistance in the air and water. We will get busy looking at the effect of gears and pulleys and the effect on forces.

Summer one we continue with the focus on Living Things and their Habitats. We specifically look at plants and the specification based on their characteristics. We will study micro-organisms and group these by looking at similarities and differences.

Summer two we will continue to develop our scientific knowledge on Animals, including humans. We focus upon the circulatory system and describe the functions of the heart, vessels and blood.

To compliment our learning we do plenty of outdoor learning wherever possible and we are lucky to have such beautiful outdoor areas including our very own wild meadow and raised beds which is currently under going a revamp!

Physical Education is conducted on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon for Y 5.The timetable can be found on the LTP and lesson plans are taken from a provider called GETSET4PE. Uniform expectations can also be found on the parent information link at the top of this page and also on the Facebook page.https://getset4education.co.uk/
