History

The aim of history teaching here at Netherton J&I School is to stimulate the children’s interest, curiosity and understanding about the past.
Through the curriculum children will gain a knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We teach children a sense of chronology and through this develop a sense of identity and an awareness of the challenges of their time. The children will be encouraged to ask questions, think critically, weigh evidence and develop perspective and judgement.
History teaching should help pupils to understand the complexity of children’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and the relationship between different groups. The study of history at Netherton is enriched by a wealth of activities and visits to help make it enjoyable, effective and memorable. We also take advantage of special events such as the World War One Centenary and the Diamond Jubilee. Tasks are set to challenge and develop all pupils, including those with Special Education Needs and those who are entitled to Pupil Premium.

Geography

Children will develop knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. They will gain an understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As the children progress through school they acquire the ability to understand the interaction between physical and human processes. Geographical knowledge understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.
In Early Years Foundation Stage the children learn about the world around them. In KS1 (Y1-2) and in KS2 (Y3-6) children develop knowledge about their locality, the United Kingdom and the world. Subject specific vocabulary is taught and a range of locations in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Australia are studied throughout the key stages. Map skills are developed through the use of atlases, maps and globes, together with aerial photographs and plans and fieldwork in the local area. Human and physical geography explores the interaction of how people live and cultures develop in tandem with the environment. They will learn about weather systems, climate and biomes.
Computing and digital technologies are used in the Geography curriculum to enhance learning. Geography is part of the ‘connected curriculum’ whereby links are made with other subject areas such as Literacy, Maths, History, and Science. We use a range of teaching strategies because we recognise that there are children with differing abilities and learning styles in school, in order to ensure suitable learning opportunities for all pupils. The children are encouraged to research, ask questions and challenge ideas and present their finished activity to each other. Tasks are set to challenge and develop all pupils, including those with Special Education Needs and those who are entitled to Pupil Premium.
